My Top 5 Mood Boosters In 2020

With the immense challenges of 2020, I’ve had lots of coaching conversations, as well as chats with friends, about what we do to lift our spirits and infuse joy into our days. Here are my top 5 mood boosters. I wonder if they resonate with you?

1. Mindful walking

This really does enhance my wellbeing – every single time. The ‘mindful’ part is the way I use my senses while walking. I feel the sun and air on my forehead (masked friends, that one’s for you ;). I literally stop and smell the roses and listen to birdsong. I look at the sky, clouds, colours of gum trees and so many delightful things. It might sound dull to you but the other day a bird swooped me 4 times so action/adventure is possible…

2. Podcasts and Books (with tea and dark chocolate)

It’s not my fault they make such great companions! And I wouldn’t dare separate them at this point... But silliness aside, the inspiration and knowledge I gain from reading and listening is deeply satisfying and such a boost. Personal development books and podcasts continue to enhance my life as well as my coaching work. And tea and dark chocolate just enhance everything.

3. Connecting with friends, in different ways

In-person isn’t always possible, but even a short phone catch up, pep talk or funny text or video can really brighten my day, as well as theirs. There are so many ways to amuse, support and help our friends. In fact, science says a great way to lift yourself up is to do something kind for someone else. These small or big gestures create a lovely cycle of care and reciprocation in our lives.

4. Yoga to favourite songs

I miss my gym and like lots of people have had to adapt to exercising at home for most of this year. One thing I love about exercising at home is how I can tailor the stretches in exactly the way I like. Focus on my favourites, (skip the one that leaves me tomato-red and panicked) and choose songs to suit my mood and moves. I’m enjoying this so much I keep jotting down songs I’m reminded of so I can add these to my next session. When I’m feeling crummy, I know that moving my body in some way will help soothe and improve my thoughts.

5. Films + TV Series

From studying Sociology and Cinema at Uni, to Positive Psychology and Coaching later on, I’ve always been fascinated by people. With such a variety of content to stream, I love to immerse myself into the stories and worlds of different characters, feel their triumphs and challenges and be wonderfully entertained.
